Bioderma Photoderm Laser SPF50+
My latest 2 SPF fails have been the Bioderma Photoderm Max SPF50+ Milk, and the Kiehl's Super Fluid UV Defense SPF50+. The Bioderma Milk's finish was too shiny and tacky - even under foundation and powdered it looked much too dewy for my taste. If I added another layer of powder things started to look un-skin like. I tried it without moisturizer and the finish was better, but it still was a little too tacky to work well under makeup and dry parts didn't feel moisturized enough.
The Kiehl's was even worse, finish was too shiny and it didn't feel like it sank into my skin at all. I tried it without moisturizer underneath, but then my skin felt dry and the shiny finish was still there. I'll keep the Bioderma Milk to use on my body, but the Kiehl's is already in the purge pile.

Bioderma Photoderm Laser SPF50+, 30ML
I ordered this from a seller on Amazon, and unfortunately didn't look at the shipping times. It came from Greece and took about 6 weeks to arrive!! Yikes. So if you do order this on Amazon, please be wary of the shipping times so you don't make the same mistake I did ha ha! However, thanks to Beauty Products Junkie for recommending the FeelUnique.com, because they do offer this product and have free shipping to the US over $15 (if I'm reading their shipping tables correctly, it's a little confusing).
The ones I have (did you notice the plural?! I've since ordered 2 more) say Laser, but according to the Bioderma site this is now called Bioderma Photoderm Spot SPF50+. I made sure my Laser ones have late enough expiration dates so that I will use them before then, but if you decide to try this SPF out you might want to order one that says 'Spot' just to be sure you are getting fresh product :-)
Also please note this is only a 30ML size, which is about 1oz. I don't think the size is too bad considering the price (prices I've seen range $21-$30), but the amount of product you are getting is smaller than many other sun protection creams and lotions out there. BUT, the packaging is nice and slim and a perfect size for traveling so I love it!!
The above picture is the Bioderma Photoderm Laser SPF50+, freshly applied.
Since I bought 2 more tubes already, you can guess that I'm loving this stuff! Beside the travel friendly factor, here's why I like this:
- Wears nicely under makeup, no balling up or feeling too heavy
- UVA rating of 38 (seen on the back of the box, UVA rays are the ones that age your skin UVB rays are the ones that burn your skin and which are measured by SPF), which is on the higher end of UVA rated and available products.
- Targeted for people who have had laser and other skin treatments, this is meant to help inhibit pigmentation and 'soothe weakened skin'. I haven't had any skin treatments, but given that I often use acids that can make my skin more sun sensitive, I really appreciate this!
- I can pat multiple layers on without the product balling up.
This claims to be colorless when applied, but I found that's not quite true. It has a very slight white cast, but that goes away after a few minutes after it has melted into my skin. But if you have a dark skin tone, it might be something to look out for.
When I wear this over moisturizer and face oil it leaves more of a satin finish, so I do need to wear powder if I wear I don't wear foundation. Under makeup, it gives my foundation a slightly more luminous finish and I do make sure to powder my oily chin and nose area, but I don't feel I need to powder elsewhere. When I wear it without moisturizer I only feel I need to powder my oily nose and chin area. However, my cheeks are dry and my forehead and neck are super dry so I only wear this alone if I'm going to be outside for an extended period of time in the direct sun. If you are really dry you will probably need at least a light serum underneath.
When worn alone, this sinks in very quickly and I'd say there's little to no dry down time. When worn over moisturizer I wait at least 5-10 minutes before applying makeup. I should probably wait longer but I get impatient ha ha!
The texture is between a lotion and cream. If you are a fan of those super liquid/watery SPF's this might be too heavy for you. When I'm in the water this does sting my eyes a little bit. Not terrible but it might really bother some people. However, I think that could be remedied by layering on a more stalwart SPF on top, such as some of the ones Shiseido carries. I'll be testing that theory soon and will keep you updated in a future post!
Final thoughts??!! I don't think this is the absolute perfect SPF, but I can honestly say it's the best SPF I've tried to date. I'm pretty excited to have found this, and I think my SPF journey is done for the immediate future...well c'mon it's me so not done forever, just for now LOL!!
